KING WILLIAM’S WAR (NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND)

MAY 1689 TO SEPTEMBER 1697

In the American theater of the wider War of the League of Augsburg, native allies of the French destroyed Schenectady, New York; Salmon Falls, New Hampshire; and Casco, York, and Wells in Maine. Pro-English Iroquois raided Canada but paid for their actions by the retaliation of France’s native allies. A pattern of white-native military alliances began to take shape in this war.

QUEEN ANNE’S WAR (THROUGHOUT THE COLONIES)

MAY 1702 TO APRIL 1713

The policy of forming native alliances was confirmed in this war. South Carolina militias waged war against the Spanish in the south, burned St. Augustine, and destroyed missions and enslaved hundreds of natives who had converted to Catholicism. The raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts by French-funded natives remains one of the most notorious events of the war in New England and added to an already deep distrust of and antipathy toward natives.
